About the role:
We are seeking a dynamic and adaptable professional to fill a hybrid Flight Test Engineer (FTE) / Solutions Engineer (SE) role. This unique position combines technical expertise in flight testing and solution engineering to validate and deploy innovative Skydio products. As an FTE, you will work cross-functionally to ensure both hardware and software meet Japan performance standards while also as an SE drive technical discovery and implementation within the Japan customer base. Your contributions will help shape product development and ensure successful deployments that meet regional and customer-specific requirements.
How you'll make an impact:
- Conduct smoke and regression tests to validate system confidence and ensure stable flying platforms.
- Validate Skydio wireless systems, Dock experiences, and customer-facing software features.
- Capture and surface product limitations early in the development cycle to improve performance and market fit.
- Assist in collecting flight data for competitive benchmarking and validate software changes to enhance system stability.
- Drive Skydio’s understanding of customer use cases, regional requirements, and metrics of success through Proof-of-Concepts (POCs) and field trials.
- Prepare and conduct system demonstrations, including setup, troubleshooting, and presenting value propositions to customers and partners.
- Support technical writing for RFIs and RFPs and provide expertise in federal contracting validation exercises.
- Occasionally interface with customers to support integration and testing needs.
- Lead system validation and customer implementations to ensure successful deployment.
What makes you a good fit (requirements):
- Must have current legal authorization to work in Japan. Sponsorship is not available for this role.
- Ability to travel up to 50%, including some international travel.
- Fluent in Japanese.
- High reading and conversational ability in English.
- Ability to obtain a local government-issued drone pilot license or equivalent certification (e.g., Part 107) to understand sUAS flight regulations and restrictions in Japan.
- Ability to obtain a Japanese drivers license.
- Thorough communication and documentation skills.
- Experience operating Linux based systems.
Experience & Skills:
- Technical knowledge or experience with UAV systems, sensors, wireless communication systems (e.g., WiFi, Cellular)
- Practical experience with UAS subsystems, mechanical/electrical system integration, and operating Linux-based systems.
- Knowledge of secure government-compliant data storage requirements a plus
- Proven ability to implement new technology and work collaboratively with technical teams to deliver projects on schedule.
- Experience testing web-based applications and interfacing with customers for integration support.
- Solid debugging skills for hardware and software systems.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree in a technical field or equivalent combination of education and experience.
- 3+ years of experience in technical roles involving UAV systems or related fields.
- Demonstrated passion for aviation and autonomous systems.
- Experience with outdoor testing environments and a keen interest in spending time outdoors.
Compensation Range: Compensation will vary based on factors, including skill level, proficiencies, transferable knowledge, and experience. In addition to base salary, Skydio full-time employees are eligible to enroll in our benefit plans and take advantage of a variety of incentives and stipends.
