Delivering Tactical Agility and Unmatched Autonomy for the DoD

On November 5, 2024, Skydio participated in the Defense Innovation Unit's (DIU) Blue UAS Refresh Demonstration at Marine Corps Air Ground Combat Center 29 Palms. This event brought together vendors and evaluators to validate cutting-edge unmanned systems for inclusion on the Blue UAS Cleared List—a benchmark for excellence in military drone technology.

Skydio proudly showcased its advanced X10D platform at the Blue UAS Refresh Challenge, an event organized by the Defense Innovation Unit (DIU) to assess next-generation UAS platforms against rigorous performance and operational criteria.

The event was structured to validate the capabilities of participating drones across core operational and technical criteria, with an emphasis on real-world performance in GNSS-denied and EW environments, autonomy, endurance, and more.

Demonstrating Superior Performance Across Key Challenge Criteria

1. Ease of Flight:

Skydio’s X10D demonstrated responsive control with an intuitive UI that simplifies complex mission setup. X10D’s autonomy drastically reduces the cognitive load on operators, allowing new pilots to become proficient within minutes. X10D's autonomous navigation and onboard AI allowed operators to focus on mission objectives rather than manual control, increasing effectiveness in high-pressure environments.

2. Learning Curve:

X10D was engineered to support immediate mission-readiness with minimal training. Our test showcased X10D’s ability to execute fully autonomous ISR missions by leveraging Skydio’s Autonomy Engine, NVIDIA Jetson Orin SoC, and Qualcomm QRB5165 processor—enabling real-time obstacle detection, mapping, and 3D modeling in GPS-denied zones. Operators were able to achieve proficiency in both mission planning and in-flight control within hours, further reducing training requirements.

3. Flight Performance:

Built for maximum operational resilience, the X10D provides a flight time of up to 40 minutes and can withstand gusts up to 28 mph. It operates seamlessly in varied climates, with an IP55 rating for dust and rain resistance, functioning in temperatures from -4°F to 113°F. The X10D rapidly deploys in under 40 seconds, ideal for time-critical operations.

4. Current Capabilities:

The X10D’s high-modularity design supports multiple payloads and sensors. It also includes the FLIR Boson+ thermal camera, which enables radiometric imaging with a sensitivity down to 30mK, ideal for detecting personnel or vehicle heat signatures even under cover or adverse conditions. Additionally, X10D's advanced sensors enable both broad area mapping and detailed 3D scans, facilitating real-time ISR, target tracking, and site assessment. This is particularly crucial in GPS-denied environments, where X10D uses its VIO (Visual Inertial Odometry) system for reliable navigation up to 300 meters in altitude.

Rigorous Verification and Validation

Skydio’s X10D stood out during tactical flight demonstrations evaluated by two separate teams of military experts. The tests included:

  • Urban Maneuvering: The X10D excelled in close-proximity, low-altitude flights with obstacle avoidance systems highlighting its agility in urban settings.
  • Night Missions: Infrared and visual night navigation systems supported seamless low-light operations.
  • Endurance, Range and Sensors: X10D demonstrated sensor performance for recognition and identification of subjects at various ranges and altitudes during long range flights. We also delivered sustained flight and demonstrated X10D’s line-of-sight communication capability in austere settings. The platform’s long-range capability aligns with DoD needs for both close-proximity ISR and extended-range reconnaissance.
  • Multi-mission Capabilities and Payloads: X10D provided seamless integration of IR, thermal, and visual sensors. The Nightsense module showcased autonomous night operations, along with the ability to map missions or conduct investigations – all carried out in complete darkness. Additional payloads, such as a spotlight and speaker mic, were demonstrated to showcase enhanced security operations.
  • EW and Visual Navigation: The X10D demonstrated significant improvements to VIO altitude limits. In addition, dual-mode navigation and EMI resilience were validated. We also extended survivability for X10D and operations through our new External Radio, enabling the operator to locate away from the RF signature and enhance sUAS communications.

Game-Changing Feedback: Why the X10D Resonates

The event emphasized real-world operational needs, and Skydio’s X10D received resounding praise:

  • Modularity and Payload Adaptability: The X10D’s open architecture supports MAVLink, RAS-A, third-party payloads and attachment options, such as spotlights and speakers. Its Control Link Interoperability Profile (IOP) v1.2 provides cross-platform compatibility with Ground Control Stations (GCS) systems like ATAK, QGC-Gov, and Autonodyne Nexus. Third-party controllers featuring a compatible Microhard radio and the MAVLink protocol are also supported. Examples include the UxV Soldier Robotic Controller (SRoC), Tomahawk Grip, and Kutta K-Tac.
  • FLIR Boson+ Sensor: Operators highlighted its superior thermal imaging for night ops, surpassing other systems.
  • Ease of Use: Evaluators cited the intuitive interface and streamlined workflow as critical enablers for unit-level ISR deployment.
  • Cybersecurity and Compliance: As an NDAA-compliant platform, X10D features AES-256 encryption, secure boot, and anti-tamper protocols, positioning it as a secure choice for operational deployments. The platform’s data integrity has been vetted for Blue UAS certification, reinforcing DoD’s confidence in Skydio’s commitment to data security and supply chain integrity.
  • System Scalability and Production Capacity: With the capability to scale to over 1,000 units per month and surge capacity exceeding 2,000 units, Skydio is positioned to meet DoD’s high-volume needs efficiently. This production scalability supports rapid deployment and replenishment, with units already in operation with U.S. and allied forces.
